Details

From my morning storm chasing forecast email list:

"Wednesday: Another MCS day in the Midwest. Southeast moving and propagating line of storms. I don't see a solid chase target again here, but would just see what pops up if you happen to be in the area. I'll probably just hold here in town and be in "spotter mode" with storms going up in a high CAPE, undersheared environment."

Severe Warned
2 miles NNE of Owaneco, IL
4:28 PM
I met up with Anton and Tracie Seimon for a local chase around the Decatur area. A supercell was taking shape southeast of the city. Temperature / dewpoint spreads were high and the environment undersheared, however, so the storm quickly developed a massive, cold precipitation core and gusted out. It looked menacing for a bit with an attempt at a wall cloud and big dust plumes under the gust front, but scud and whale's mouths were all that followed as the complex went outflow dominant.

I think the gorgeous sunset on the drive home stole the show on this chase, however.

Conclusion

Low odds local play didn't pan out and this chase got marked up as a bust. It had a couple of photogenic moments at the very start and very end, however.
