Summary

Short distance cold front chase in central Illinois. Noted several small thunderstorms with updraft bases and flanking lines, but observed no notable supercellular structure.

This was the third day in a row of backyard storm chasing. It looked like there would be one last day of chaseable storms before the upper level flow departed and the cold front kicked through. Instability was meager, but steep lapse rates and 0-3km CAPE had me hoping for me a low topped storm with a spin-up. I went east down I-72 toward Decatur chasing some small cells with solid convection and pretty flanking lines. Bases dwindled on the tiny “schnibs”, however, and I never saw anything supercellular let alone tornadic.

Conclusion

It was probably desperation at this point, but at least I wasn’t missing more close to home tornadoes.
