Details
This was Brindley and my second day chasing upslope storms in the Black Hills. We checked out of the fabulous Hotel Alex Johnson and walked over to Harriet and Oak for a vegan breakfast/lunch, bumping into a few other chasers there including Jim Tang and crew.
We had time to kill so we hit the Bear Country gift shop and hiked a trail just south of town with scenic overlooks of a valley where hot air balloon launches are conducted.

A line of cells started to go up from south of Sundance up toward Beulah. We found good viewing spots and waited for something to go dominant.
Cells seemed to struggle before filling in as a line. I was hoping for a boundary accident at this point with an updraft getting ahold of some vorticity. However, the line gusted out with cold rain and fizzled.
We called the chase and headed into Rapid City for dinner at the Ruby Tuesday, beating the developing squall line back to town. We were soon joined by Tony Laubach and his chase partner Rocky.
Conclusion
This was our second day in a row where the storm chasing prospects were meager and the Black Hills touring was the highlight.
Lessons Learned
- Busted chases are much easier when they happen in scenic areas with lots of activities.
